Unguided Goose Hunting

Unguided goose hunting requires the do it yourself goose hunter to scout. Scouting will always be required regardless of how good our recommendation may be of where to hunt.

The self guided goose hunt advantage singular to Mid-America Hunting Association above that of any other option that exists on tens of thousands plus acres of private crop land that we control. In that amount of acreage the goose hunter can scout to where the geese are, set up and hunt rather than pick a spot and hope they show up.

The start of that scouting are the web site waterfowl reports. The next step would be to hit the road glassing around the area where Mid-America Hunting Association has its tens of thousands of acres and find where the geese are. Once in that area step up a spread and start calling.

Understanding this scouting requirement is often agreed to that even though geese may repetitively use the same feeding field for a stretch of days they may not be there the next day or any other time for the rest of the season. And, we have seen sufficient variety to their feeding patterns to know they do not always conform to accepted norms.

"...After the hunt we stayed to call and watch for the fun of it. One of the pictures from the hunt...

We started to do well and this picture is right before my partner finished with his last Canada...it was just as they set their wings to come in...we set up about 150 yards apart with 400 deks between us..."

A contrast to this unguided goose hunting approach would be a guided goose hunt with the typical goose hunt outfitter clustered around one of the larger state or federal refuges that see much more pressure from middle of the regular waterfowl season through spring snow goose. Being able to get out and always from the more highly pressured areas often is the difference between seeing a lot of geese and actually being able to goose hunt.

What we do is provide recommendations on the region to scout. Provide crop field locations through our online map library and water details on our land lease maps. The rest is up to the hunter to make the rest of his unguided goose hunting experience.

The minimal goose set up would be a layout blind and a couple of dozen decoys. That may be on a wet only, wet/dry or straight field set. The most hard core goose hunters will team up using ATV's on permitted fields to place large spreads in excess of 1,000 decoys. Some may have two fields separated by miles of such a spread. These field spreads may be left in place at the Association hunters own risk for as long as wanting to hunt.

Those that set the small spreads are often Canada Goose hunters that are willing to travel a bit more and have mobility to react from day to day. Those with the large spreads are more often late/spring Snow or Light Goose hunters. The self guided advantage is the Association hunter gets to hunt his way and where he wants.
