Kansas December Trip
Hi Susie and Jon,
Yesterday, December 29 – Made the early morning trek to X County. Hunted there from 8:30 AM to 1:30 PM. Great looking cover. Flushed two hen pheasants. Found two quail roosts. Saw other pheasant sign in spots. Thought about driving to X County, but I was tired of 35 degrees and a blowing drizzle. Radar indicated it was getting it too. So we drove to X. There were a few thousand mallards feeding in a dry corn field just down the road. They were flying over and trying to land on a lakes. Both lakes are frozen and so, so low. Lots of feathers in the mud from where the ducks were there before the ice.
Today, December 30 – Scouted farms from the road. Cover is pretty thin. Decided to keep driving.
Learned first hand about muddy, Kansas backroads. Managed to not get stuck, but we could find no way to get to many of the farms. Moved on to farms X to stay on black top. Thoroughly hunted both. Two coveys and two quail killed. No pheasants. No birds at all on the last farm. Lots of deer sign. I think there are a group of bucks holed up on the N boundary. Lots of big droppings.
Super fresh rubs some still with green bark. Got a lot of good dog training in. All my dogs are young. Our lab is ten months old. Three times this trip I’ve had her around coveys. She’s always been off in the bushes being goofy, completely clueless to the birds. Today’s first covey flushed in between us… close. She yelped and took off running like something bit her! Then ran after me as I chased down a crippled bird in the milo, and she made the retrieve. She later flushed and chased a single. Our Brittany pup was in birds his entire hunt. First the singles from the first covey. Then the second covey and more singles. He was really getting a taste for quail.
We had so much fun today that we decided to stay an extra night and hunt tomorrow.

Tree Stands
Our agreement with the landowners is all tree stands will be removed by the end of the deer season. Deer season is closed so all tree stands must be removed. Any tree stands left behind will be considered trash or stands from hunters that do not have permission. They will be taken down and disposed of.
