Poison Ivy

We would like to warn traveling hunters coming from states that do not have poison ivy, the Midwest is infested with poison ivy. Poison ivy rash is caused by an allergic reaction to an oily resin called urushiol. It has sent many hunters to the emergency room to be treated. It has 3 leaves and grows on the ground and on vines in the trees.

Dormant vines and stems carry the oil in the fall and winter after the leaves drop. To avoid the rash while scouting and hanging tree stands we recommend to wear long sleeve shirts, pants and gloves. Once you return to your vehicle change your clothes and wash off any skin that could have been exposed with soap and water. This is a good routine to avoid the grueling consequences of a poison ivy reaction.
